Overview

Basilar is a concept for a companion app that keeps festival-goers oriented across days, venues, and services. Reducing friction between what people need and what the event delivers.

Problem

  1. As a niche festival within a competitive European scene, Basilar needed to offer more than just a lineup. To stand out and build lasting connections with its audience, the experience had to deliver a clear, memorable value beyond the event itself.
  2. Previous events revealed challenges in managing tickets, food services, and on-site logistics. Without a unified system, coordination across different touchpoints became inefficient, impacting both the attendee experience and the operational flow.
  3. Unexpected logistical issues in past events led to financial losses the production could not afford. Without real-time visibility into activity and usage during the event, the team struggled to respond quickly and maintain control over operations.

Solution

A mobile-first structure that supports fluid, on-demand access to key moments, from arrival and movement between areas to food and showtime, creating a clear, cohesive experience that supports both users and operations. Lightweight real-time signals keep attendees and organizers aligned with what's happening in the moment, while a visual system designed for outdoor conditions ensures clarity through high contrast, short labels, and predictable patterns in any environment.

Sofia International Visitor

Who she is

Sofia is a project manager from Berlin who frequently travels for festivals. She seeks high-quality, well-organized experiences and prefers minimizing logistical friction during short visits.

Key Frictions

  • Language and unfamiliar environment increase cognitive load
  • Difficulty understanding transportation and festival logistics
  • Limited time makes inefficiencies more frustrating

What she needs

An efficient, easy-to-navigate experience with real-time updates and clear access to key services.

Pain Points

Daniela Local Attendee

  1. Entry bottleneck breaks the experience flow: Daniela waited over an hour at the entrance due to slow ticket scanning and poor organization. This delay caused frustration before the event even started and negatively impacted her overall perception of the festival.
  2. Poor transport communication leads to missed moments: She couldn't find clear shuttle schedules or pickup points, causing her to miss a live performance. Lack of visibility and real-time updates created uncertainty and reduced her ability to plan her experience.

Sofia International Visitor

  1. Lack of navigation increases cognitive load: Without a clear map or navigation system, Sofia struggled to locate key areas such as stages, food, and facilities. This created constant friction and made the experience feel overwhelming in an unfamiliar environment.
  2. Unpredictable food availability reduces trust: Sofia had difficulty finding vegan options, and vendors ran out of food without any real-time updates. This led to frustration and reduced trust in the festival's organization and service quality.

Information Architecture

To address the identified pain points, the app structure was designed to simplify navigation, reduce friction, and centralize key services.
